a new friend

Here are the great fresh veggies we picked up at Polk's on our bike ride and grilled for dinner. I have recently discovered leeks and have been making them with just about every meal. Leeks for breakfast? Yes please.

We got new neighbors and they have a 6 month old lab/retriever mix and she is adorable. Her name is Marley. She and Sawyer get along really well and they were having the best time rolling around in the dirt.

So the poor baby had to have a bath. He was not very happy about this, but at least he's clean.

My midterm critique was today and it went pretty well, but Im not totally satisfied with the work Ive done so far this quarter. I need to step it up. I'll be back tomorrow with pics and new ideas to share!

Finished Object and a new skirt

I finished knitting my red bamboo yarn that Im using for a towel/washcloth and here it is blocking. I made a bias tape from an Amy Butler fabric for the trim, which matches the bathroom quite nicely.

It looked too blue in there and I decided it needed some contrast. I want to do something to the shower curtain with this fabric. Maybe a stripe? I love this bamboo yarn because it feels like a soft linen. Bamboo is also a sustainable, renewable resource, and has antibacterial qualities (much like a wood cutting board). I think this will be great for our very humid, mildew inducing envirnment in the bathroom. I'll let you know how it works out.

And here I am in my new skirt from anthropologie. I took this yesterday before I went to work. This was a rebellious work outfit because I am supposed to wear a black suit, but I just couldnt do it another day. Im not really a rule follower and especially now that I am getting screwed on commission again Im pretty much going to do what I want... within reason haha. But the skirt is beautiful and lightweight. Perfect for Savannah because it is already getting pretty hot, finally. I love the warm weather here.

I met with my advisor today and planned my schedule for the next year and a half. It looks like I'll graduate spring 09, or close to that time. Im really worried Im going to run out of aid. I should probably set up a meeting with my financial aid counselor. It is slightly frustrating because Ive been at SCAD for a while already but I have to much farther to go. Im grateful for the prerequisites though because looking back on it, I wasnt ready for grad school when I entered the program. I finally feel like I (almost) know what Im doing. I was concerned I would have to pic a specific avenue, whether it was fine art or studio production, but I think if I play it right, I can do both. Ive been trying to plan out a quilt top design for the past 2 days and Im not getting very far. Maybe something will happen with it tomorrow.

Well, Im off to eat a piece of coffee cake and relax before bed. Pretty lame for a Friday night huh? I do have to go to work early tomorrow, so I guess thats my excuse.

goodies

This was in the package that finally came last night. Awesome fabric from Purlsoho

All washed and pressed, laid out to get ideas for a quilt.

And this charming black and white ceramic hook was in the package that got me out of bed this morning.

Its from Anthropologie and I'll show you what else was inside later along with napkins I made today that I couldnt get to photograph well.

I rode my bike to the Jen Library today. Trust me, this was a big deal. Ive been in Savannah for 2 years now and I have just gotten a bike. The whole time I kept thinking, "Please dont hit me, please, please dont hit me." But it was really fun and felt very freeing not to have to find a parking spot.

I am exhausted from riding around town and my long walk with Sawyer today so Im going to crash but I'll post more pics tomorrow. Sweet dreams!

This is a Tuesday

Tuesdays are great days. I dont have class, and I switched my work schedule so I dont have to work Tues. nights anymore. I slept late, took Sawyer for a nice long walk around town and Chris and I picked up our bikes from the shop. They are both second-hand and needed a little bit of work done on them. Mine is an old cruiser. It has rust on it, I love it. I'll post pics later.

Ive been doing lots of baking lately. After my grandmother died I got her old Kitchen Aid mixer and it has to be the original kind. The top doesnt lift up, instead you have to turn this lever to lift the bowl up.

Today I made Pamelas gluten free chocolate chip cookies. They are heaven. They taste like actual real chocolate chip cookies, which are hard to come by when you have celiacs.

Im applying for an internship at Workingclass Studio at SCAD this summer (which is where the plate in the above photo is from). I have to show 3 examples of my best work so I took a few photos today and Im not sure exactly what to show them. Im guessing I wont need to send fine art pics cuz they'd want to see what I can market.

This is a knitting needle book I made in my Imgaes on Fabric class last quarter. I dyed the fabric using H dye.

These are part of the reason why I didnt sleep more than 3 hours a night for a week during finals.

The 3 panel notebook

They are really useful! I need to work a little more on my craftsmanship and refine the process. I think I would also add a flap to cover the needles and snap closed at the bottom so the needles wont go flying everywhere.

This is a little sketchbook I made. Its only about 4x5" and its great for taking everywhere to jot down ideas. I mono printed the cover using an old copper roof layered over a print I pulled off a sheet of plywood, then I did sewed some detail. Im not sure what the binding method I used is called. I pretty much just looked at a drawing of how it was done and figured it out.

And this was the adorable little face looking at me while I took my photographs. He is such a good boy, Im a proud mama.

Im off to iron my new fabric from Purlsoho. Have a great evening!

the first one

this has been the year of firsts. a lot of new things are happening in my life right now. i recently switched my major from painting to fibers, and its the first time ive felt confident at scad. and check out my breakfast. i just started buying brown eggs and i got one with twins! that has never happened to me before.

ive been lurking other artists blogs for quite a while and im ready to join the amazing artist community out here. so hopefully this will be a cool place to check out what im doing and what im into and to get feedback from other artists and anyone who has a comment or question. i want to keep myself accountable for what im doing (and what i say im going to do) and have a place to view it all. i will try to keep myself uncensored in an effort to be as real and true to myself as possible. so expect some spelling and gramatical errors, but i'll do my best.

lately ive been felting, knitting and sewing, and sometimes making books. im trying to cultivate ideas for a line of home accessories and i also create fine art. i havent been doing a lot of the fine art thing the past few weeks. last night i made a shirt. its the first shirt ive ever made and its not too bad but i seriously doubt i will ever wear it. it was basically an experiment and im trying to get comfortable with my bernina. i dont like reading directions or cutting out patterns so i just took some measurements and went for it.

chris was out of town this weekend visiting our friends in pensacola, fl so sawyer and i had the house to ourselves and he was doing a great job of keeping me company. we went for a long walk yesterday all around the city and he is getting so much better at paying attention to what i am doing and following my lead. hes about 10 months now and we desperately need to get him fixed. he has these hormone-induced outbursts and he'll jump around me in circles growling and nipping if he gets too excited outside off-leash. i am having a hard time making his appointment because i dont really want to alter him. i know its for his own good tho. he'll be much calmer and happier, although he is a very well behaved little puppy.

i must get back to work but i'll be back with some pics of my stuff later.
